We can be sure that God was concerned as to who would be the earthly father of his Son. Joseph truly paints a portrait of what faithfulness to God is like.

He was able to be faithful because he had three aspects – obedience, communion with God, and courage. Joseph was faithful because he obeyed God without hesitation.

An angel appeared to Joseph in his dream, and when Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him in spite of how difficult it was going to be.

What about us? How far are we prepared to obey God when things get tough? Joseph was also faithful by communion.

In Matthew 1: 19, we read that Joseph was a righteous man, committed to Scripture. His constant communion with God made him a man of clarity.

Joseph was called a righteous man, because Joseph was a man who wanted to do what was right in the eyes of God. Joseph was faithful by courage.

It took courage to resist the urge to denounce Mary publicly, to listen to the voice of God and not the voice of society, and to remain true to Mary in the face of societal pressure and disdain.

Courage is really seen in how well we handle adversity and change. Let us accept the challenge to be like Joseph that we may together transform lives and change the world for the glory of God.
