John Wesley was a disciplined Christian and a Christian leader even before his encounter at Aldersgate in 1738. He had an impressive résumé and sincerely sought to live out his faith according to Scripture. Outwardly, he demonstrated his love for God through ministry, spiritual discipline, and religious activities. Yet inwardly—especially after returning to England from his missionary journey—he struggled with uncertainty and lacked assurance that his sins were truly forgiven.
One evening, though reluctant, he attended a meeting on Aldersgate Street. While listening to the reading of Martin Luther’s preface to the Book of Romans, his heart was “strangely warmed,” and he had a personal encounter with the living God. In that moment, he realized he had been trying to earn salvation through his own strength instead of placing his trust in Jesus Christ.
As he surrendered fully to Christ, the Holy Spirit bore witness that he was truly a child of God. He received deep assurance that he was forgiven, accepted, and saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. His life and ministry were transformed. He became a man filled with spiritual fire and courage—confident enough to step out in faith for God, not by his own strength but by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Today, we long to experience that same “strangely warmed” touch of God’s power in our lives. We desire to have full assurance that we are God’s children and to live in confidence by His grace. We can be a shining light, used powerfully by God for His glory—not by our own strength, but through the power of the Holy Spirit.
