The book of Nehemiah tells the story of a Persian official who, though Jewish by heritage, returned to Jerusalem to rebuild its broken walls and restore the spiritual life of the community. The people faced significant challenges and opposition. Yet they responded with prayer, dependence on God, and unwavering focus on the work of rebuilding.
Similarly, believers today will encounter opposition when doing God’s work. However, the greatest danger is not what confronts us from the outside but what corrodes us within. One such internal threat is discouragement, fueled by fatigue, fear, and the constant repetition of bad news. It wears down our soul.
We can overcome discouragement through encouragement: by resting physically and spiritually in God’s promises, grounding ourselves in His Word to combat fear, and replacing bad news with the truth of the Good News.
Another internal danger is sin. We must take sin seriously, repenting and asking the Holy Spirit for strength to overcome it. When we trust in God, He forgives our sin and delivers us from its eternal consequences. He is with us, empowering us with His abundant grace. Even when we do not see immediate results, God uses our faithful service to accomplish His purposes and impact those around us.
As we seek to do God's will, we will face opposition both from without and within. Yet we press on in faith, courage, and wisdom. We do it together, supporting one another in prayer. With the assurance that God fights for us, we can experience the fullness of His abundant life.
