2 Samuel 7 is a defining moment in King David’s life. After 20 years of running and fleeing, David became a king. David felt uneasy and wanted to build a physical temple for God.

David assumed he knew the will of God and got everything prepared, but God said no. God revealed His heart to David - He is not looking at a physical space, but to occupy David’s heart. God reminded David to look back at his past, of how He had carried David and the nation of Israel. Time and time again, God delivered, provided, corrected and sustained. These were opportunities to enthrone God as his LORD, his King and his master.

There were two promises given by God. The first promise was that it will be his son, Solomon, to build the physical temple. David’s role was to prepare the foundation and set Solomon for success. It was humbling for David as he would not get credit or honour for it.

The second promise to David was to build a spiritual house. It was humbling for David too, as God knew David would fall into sin and temptation with Bathsheba. God took his sin seriously, let him faced the consequences and led him down to the path of repentance. Yet, God chose to establish David’s house forever.

David’s response was to sit before the Lord, ready to listen to God, and allow his heart to be humbled and transformed. He was ready to accept what God had in stored for him, to build God’s house in God’s way.
