โLove as Jesus lovesโ is a general command for all Christians. It is not an exclusive demand on the Christian husband, but Paul uses the Christian marriage as an example because it is patterned after the relationship between Christ and the church.
How did Jesus love the church? He gave Himself up as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God to pay for our sin and to redeem us.
So, what should a Christian husband's love look like? It is a love that sacrifices. Loving your wife sacrificially involves the day-to-day choices you make. Wives are commanded to submit to their husbands and to acknowledge and affirm their role as head of the household.
What kind of a leader should the husband be? Jesus said that the leader has to be the servant of all. The Christian husband must be willing to lay down his life for his wife. Further, a Christian husband's love has to be love that makes sense to his wife. You need to do what you can to ensure that your wife feels loved. That she is receiving the love, aware of the love, and that she appreciates that love. Not just the fact that you have loved.
God's love is a covenantal love, an unconditional love where God chooses and pledges to love us.
That is the kind of love expected of a Christian husband. A love that perseveres, that never gives up regardless of the challenges you face - through eternity and to an infinite degree.
