In Philippians 1:3–14, Paul reminds us that we are partners in the gospel, pressing on to spread God’s message of salvation through Christ. God’s grace abounds even when we encounter difficulties and when things do not seem to go our way. The apostle Paul set himself as an example: even in prison, he believed that what had happened to him served to advance the gospel.

He also encouraged the church to press on amid suffering, tension, and heresy within the church. What, then, is our expected response?

Firstly, we can look back in order to walk forward, remembering that if God has seen us through difficult seasons, He will surely see us through into the future as well.

Secondly, we can look to encourage one another, which is what the apostle Paul did by writing to the Philippian church. If anyone among us is discouraged in this journey of being partners in the gospel, let us look to encourage one another.

Finally, let us look to Christ as our source of grace and hope, because it is He who will bring to completion the good work that He has begun in us.
