In today’s society, we seem to have greater opportunities to pursue happiness and a fulfilled life through social progress and digital technology. Yet, despite these advancements, rates of depression and suicide continue to rise. So, are we seeking happiness in the right way? What does it mean to live a fulfilled life?

To answer this, we can look to the life of Jesus. As the Son of God, He was all-powerful and could have lived in a way that avoided suffering. Yet, He knew the purpose of His life and chose the path of the cross. Jesus did not give Himself for His own sake, but for others. He gave Himself for those who loved and followed Him, and also for those who betrayed, abandoned, and ultimately crucified Him. When Peter tried to dissuade Him from going to Jerusalem to suffer, Jesus rebuked him, saying that he was setting his mind on human ways rather than on God’s ways.

Similarly, a fulfilled life is ultimately about being like Christ. For Christ came to give of Himself, not for Himself, but for us. If we want to find fulfilment as Christ did, we must give of ourselves, not for ourselves, but for others. This requires a transformation in how we see life itself. We deny earthly priorities and desires, seeing them in light of the cross. We willingly do only what pleases God by giving ourselves to others, so that His purpose and will can be accomplished.
