Sin is the greatest battle the believer has to face. How we deal with sin has a direct impact on our salvation. Peter says in 1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober-minded, be watchful, your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour”. He distracts us from doing what is right and pleasing to God.
The enemy has a lot of devices, and his main agenda is to separate us from God. While we have been delivered from the penalty of sin when we receive Christ, the power of sin continues to be at work in us. It is a daily battle.
God delivers us from the power of sin as we work together with Him. But we have to cooperate with the Holy Spirit. Jesus says that no one can snatch us out of the Father's hand, but we on our own can walk out.
God requires us to do our part and to abide in Christ. In 2 Peter 1:5-7, we are told that because we are saved, we must make every effort to supplement out faith with virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love.
We cannot possibly be sinless on this side of eternity but we can sin less. We have the confidence that He will complete the work He has begun in us. But if we deliberately continue in sin, then there is judgment reserved for us. And this is the most important decision we need to make.
