God had many promises to the Jews - promises of a covenant made with Abraham, salvation, blessings, and spiritual leadership among the nations. However, Israel had rejected the Messiah, raising the question: Was God going to cast away His people and cancel His promises due to their unbelief? The answer is no, as there was a remnant who remained faithful to Jesus by faith. Israel had been temporarily set aside, but not the individual Jews who believed in Jesus.

Israel refused to believe because they were hardened; they willfully and persistently rejected God's grace, making their own malicious choice. God allowed them to go their own way, and their poor choice made it seem like God had not kept His promises. Yet, God was at work all along, doing what He had promised.

Israel's unbelief opened the door for the gospel to be presented to the Gentiles. They recognized it and obtained salvation by God's sovereign grace - freely given to the undeserving, not by their works or earned by favor. They were reconciled with God and grafted into the blessing that the Jews had rejected. This blessing - perfect peace, vibrant joy - provoked the Jews to be jealous and desire their relationship back with God through the Messiah, giving hope that Israel will return to faith in Christ.

To the Gentiles, the warning was to beware of self-confidence and pride. As God's gift of salvation was received by faith through God's grace, Gentiles had to remain humble and not boast about it, especially towards the Jews who had been cast away.

In our lives today, the truth remains: God is with us even in the midst of our storms. He cares deeply, listens, and will not cast us aside. We must not take His patience for granted.
