Community as People - Dr Chan Yew Ming

A church building does not merely gather the people of God; it serves as a place where God’s presence is among His people. Regardless of where believers are, they can be assured that God is with them, carrying and caring for them. The essence of the church is not a physical building, but a community of people who know God and journey together in faith.

Because the church is a community, when we seek true belonging, the dynamics of relationships must be rooted in love. We should guard against the danger of putting ourselves at the centre, where we can no longer hear or understand other possibilities for growth. While struggles are natural and unavoidable, the process provides the sharpening we need through others’ advice and challenges.

In hindsight, we begin to understand how God works in our lives. If we are patient, we learn to manage our emotions and express our love for others. In truth, we care for others and grow together. Over time, as we accept others in our community, we experience the Spirit who leads us to know the God who values His people.

Therefore, through a sense of belonging, growth, and acceptance, the church is a community of people — not a building.
